About Portree and the Isle of Skye
Portree is the capital of the Isle of Skye and is the ideal base
for touring the island. The town has all facilities,
including banks, library, hospital, supermarkets, specialist shops
and many attractive places to eat and drink.
Portree lies between Skye's two major mountain areas, the Cuillins
and the Trotternish Ridge, and fine views of both can be had from
various spots around the town. Portree Bay is a natural
harbour set in dramatic surroundings. There are a variety of
excellent walks in and around Portree to suit all ages.
There are many visitor attractions in Portree itself including the
Aros Heritage Centre, the
An Tuireann Arts Centre and the
Skye
Scene Highland Ceilidh. Further afield some of the major
attractions in Skye are
Dunvegan Castle, the
Skye Museum of Island
Life, the
Clan Donald Centre and the
Talisker Distillery.
There are many fascinating craft workshops and small museums
around the island.
The island abounds in antiquities, wildlife and scenic splendour,
and is a magnet for geologists, birdwatchers, climbers,
photographers and outdoor sports enthusiasts. Skye has its
own distinctive culture, with Gaelic still spoken in many homes,
and almost every evening there is traditional music to be heard in
a pub or ceilidh somewhere on the island.
